It merged the previous groups Chemical Reactor Engineering, Inorganic Membranes & Membrane Reactors and Energy Intensified Chemical Reaction Engineering. An important driver was to change from the structure of a professor with associate and assistant professors to a group of principle investigators, each with their own identifiable field, including at an assistant level. The formation was triggered by the departure of Professors Schouten andHessel and the promotion of Gallucci and Van der Schaaf to professor. Associate Professor Noël from Hessel’s group and Assistant Professor Neira d’Angelo from Schouten’s group joined SPE. Professor Kolb was in the group
